How to Layer for a Houston Fall
I remember it was August 1st this year when people all over social media started posting about drinking pumpkin spice lattes, frolicking in cool weather, choosing costumes for Halloween, and yes, even getting ready for Christmas. Here in Houston, we get excited about fall extremely early which is unfortunate for us, since in actuality our fall doesn't really start until November. We still want to embrace all of our fall feelings though and dress the part. Cozy sweaters, leather jackets, scarves....and then we realize...it's October. It's 75 degrees outside. We can't... or can we? What if there was a way to layer for our Fall weather and not die of a massive heat stroke? A way to look and feel fall-esque while sipping hot cocoa and making our Christmas lists? Fear not fellow Texans, because I'm sharing 5 different ways to be outfitted for our Houston weather that will have you feeling cute, cool, and festive.
THE PERFECT SOUTHERN SWEATER
Sweaters. They are very cute to look at but oh so very hot to wear. How on earth do you pull one off in Houston when you're not in a cold air conditioned building? Luckily, a big trend right now is the crocheted sweater, which is perfect for letting a breeze blow in and out on the skin. Also, getting a cropped sweater, like the one below, has less fabric that would keep you hot and sweaty. Pair this cropped, crocheted sweater with the very trendy midi dress. Add a belt and layer over the sweater, half tucking the hem into the belt. Now it looks like you're wearing a skirt. Totally transforms this dress into something brand new! Say you do get warm? Just pop off the sweater and rock this look with the taller ankle boot, the must-have boot of the season, and still be seasonly appropriate!
P.S- Petite women, you can wear this too! Order a petite and make sure to wear a belt and keep it high! It elongates your legs and proportions everything out. (I know because I'm 5'3")
A LEGGINGS BEST FRIEND
You know when you want to wear a certain top, but you also want to wear leggings and the top isn't long enough to cover your behind? The epitome of annoying, am I right? This tunic top from LOFT is the perfect solution! It allows you to wear any length top with leggings and gives the outfit interest with a chic, layered look. Leather is also always a fall favorite, this year head-to-toe leather is big trend, but too much in Houston and you'll be gasping for air by end of day. Instead, get your leather fix by selecting clothing that is accented in faux leather (real leather is much hotter). These faux leather leggings are ideal because the back side is a ponte material, which is more breathable than full faux. Also, wearing a short sleeve top layered over the tunic gives your arms air to stay cool since your legs are covered. The perfect compromise!
SHEER CLASS
Oh, how I love the look of a turtleneck. So sleek and sophisticated and yet, I have never been able to wear one very often in the Lone Star State. Imagine my "sheer" joy (pun intended) when I found out that mesh turtlenecks can be found everywhere this season. Still able to keep you warm on a chilly day but more breathable than other turtleneck fabrics. One of the biggest trends for 2019, is to layer tops underneath dresses. In addition, it's a great way to cover up your arms without wearing a jacket! This dress also allows air flow to your legs in this look. Such a classy and up-to-date look in this textured combo.
THE BREEZY DUSTER
This super soft and lightweight duster is the ideal addition to your wardrobe. Cardigans are always a lovely fall look and this one has a slight flair for the dramatic, sure to get you compliments wherever you go. Not bulky or overbearing, this feather light layer can be dressed down with jeans or up with a cognac faux leather skirt and a white shell top. The neutral colors in this palette make this ensemble look expensive and rich and so do the gold accents on the jewelry and belt!
A FLORAL FALL
Dark floral was seen all over the runways and it's now all over retail stores, just in time for the crisp months ahead. I love the contrast of bright blooms on a dark background. Make a blouse like this pop even more by adding an extra something. Layering over a cropped, square neck tank both defines your waist for a flattering silhouette and gives you a cheery and cute fall layer. Choose a balloon sleeve blouse like this one for a fun and stylish effect. This outfit is perfect for early October when it's still warm outside. Pair with a heeled sandal to stay at the ideal temperature for early fall months.
